Our MeetMarket, now in its 18th year, is one of the world’s largest documentary and factual markets and pitching forums. Open to new documentary features and series, the MeetMarket connects projects and documentary makers with international industry experts from across the documentary landscape.
Each year, 40-50 projects are selected to pitch at the festival; many have returned to screen in our Film Programme; have been selected to screen in international festivals across the world; and have been nominated for, and gone on to win prestigious awards!

A Night of Knowing Nothing by Payal Kapadia
A university student in India, writes letters to her estranged lover, while he is away. Through these letters, we get a glimpse into the drastic changes taking place around her. Merging reality with fiction, dreams, memories, fantasies and anxieties, an amorphous narrative unfolds.
The title pitched at our MeetMarket in 2021; it has screened at festivals such as CPH:DOX, IDFA, TIFF, Dok Leipzig and Cannes; it won the 2021 Cannes Golden Eye Award.

All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen
In New Delhi, legions of birds fall from the skies as the city smolders with social unrest. Brothers Nadeem and Saud race to save a casualty of the turbulent times: the black kite, a majestic bird of prey essential to their city’s ecosystem, struggling to survive in Delhi’s contaminated environment.
The title pitched at our MeetMarket in 2020; it has screened at festivals such as Cannes, IDFA, Busan, Sundance and BFI London Film Festival. It was the most accoldaded documentary of 2022, scooping awards such as the Cannes Golden Eye Award, the Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary, four IDA Awards and more; it has also been nominated for for Best Documentary at both the upcoming 2023 BAFTAs and Academy Awards.

Stray by Elizabeth Lo
The gaze of three stray dogs provides a window into the overlooked corners of Turkish society. Zeytin, Nazar and Kartal lead us on inconspicuous journeys throughout Istanbul, allowing for unusual and unvarnished portraits of human and canine life.

The Edge of Democracy by Petra Costa
The personal and political fuse to explore one of the most dramatic periods in Brazilian history. With unprecedented access to Presidents Dilma Rousseff and Lula da Silva, we witness their rise and fall.
The title pitched at our MeetMarket in 2017 and later screened in our Film Programme in 2019; it has screened at other festivals such as Hot Docs, Sundance, CPH:DOX, True/False and Visions du Réel; and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Shooting the Mafia by Kim Longinotto
Following the life and career of Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia, whose striking, life-threatening photos documented the rule of the Sicilian Mafia. Battaglia offers a glimpse into life under Mafia rule and those who live through it.

The Silence of Others by Almudena Carracedo
Filmed over six years, The Silence of Others reveals the epic struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco, as they organize a groundbreaking international lawsuit and fight a “pact of forgetting” around the crimes they suffered.
The title pitched at our MeetMarket in 2015, and later screened in our Film Programme in 2018 where it received our Grand Jury Award; it has screened at other festivals such as Hot Docs, Ji.hlava, IDFA, CPH:DOX and Berlinale; it won the IDA Pare Lorentz Award in 2018, as well as the Berlinale Panorama Audience Award and the Peace Film Prize.

5 Broken Cameras by Emad Burnat & Guy Davidi
Filmed from the perspective of a Palestinian farm labourer (Emad Burnat), 5 Broken Cameras was shot using six different video cameras - five of which were destroyed in the process of documenting Emad's family life, as well as the Palestinian and International resistance to Israeli appropriation and occupation of land.
The title pitched at our MeetMarket in 2010, and returned to screen in our Film Programme in 2012 where it won our Audience Award; it has screened at other festivals such as Hot Docs, Cinéma du Réél, Sundance, Busan and IDFA; it won the IDFA Audience Award and Special Jury Award in 2011, Busan Cinephile Award in 2012, and the Sundance Directing Award (World Cinema Documentary Competition) in the same year.

The Act of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer
When the government of Indonesia was overthrown by the military in 1965, Anwar and his friends were promoted from small-time gangsters to death squad leaders. Now celebrated as heroes, these unrepentant murders are challenged by the filmmakers to re-enact some of their many murders in the style of the American movies they love.
The title pitched at our MeetMarket in 2009, and returned to screen in our Film Programme in 2013 where it won our Audience Award and Special Jury Award; it has screened at other film festivals such as TIFF, SXSW, Sydney Film Festival and Berlinale; it won Best Documentary at the 67th BAFTA Awards.
